1. Bonding Treatments
Bonding can yield significant results in just one painless office visit. Bonding hides natural flaws such as fluorosis and tetracycline stain by placing a thin plastic coating on the visible surface of the teeth.
A putty-like bonding material is applied to the surface of a treated tooth. The bonding material is then shaped and colored to produce a natural look. The surface is then hardened, smoothed, and polished by a high intensity light.
Bonding can also improve crooked or malformed teeth, and close gaps between teeth (Note: these conditions are best treated with orthodontic treatment). It can change the shape and color of a tooth, or many teeth to improve the appearance of your smile. Disfigured, damaged or decayed teeth can now be restored in a single visit to our office.
Techniques for tooth-colored restorations have improved drastically in the last twenty years. We now have higher quality materials, improved material adhesion, and less invasive tooth preparation techniques. These new materials are more cost effective and can be shade-matched and contoured to look like natural teeth.
Please keep in mind that bonding is an alternative treatment to porcelain veneers or crowns, which has a more permanent affect on the teeth.
2. Bridges
A bridge is a fixed appliance that is generally attached to two or more teeth, with one or more teeth on each side of the space where a tooth or multiple teeth are missing. An artificial tooth attached in the middle of the bridge fills in the gap where the missing tooth was. The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared for crowns (see crowns) and a highly accurate impression or mold is made of the prepared area. This mold is used to create a gold or porcelain (tooth colored) bridge in a special laboratory. The bridge is then cemented onto the prepared surface of the teeth, effectively creating the appearance of a “new” tooth.
Advantages:
Unlike dentures, a fixed bridge is never removed. It is stable in the mouth and works very similar to natural teeth. By filling the gap and stopping the movement of other teeth, a fixed bridge is an excellent investment, providing better chewing ability, heading off jaw joint problems and saving money that might otherwise be spent on future dental treatment.
Disadvantages:
Fixed bridges are excellent restorations and have few disadvantages. They are highly durable, but they will eventually need to be re-cemented or replaced due to normal wear. One major disadvantages of fixed bridges is that adjacent teeth to the space will have to be prepared for this procedure. In some instances, the teeth next to the space has never had any restorations done prior to the bridge work, incorporating these teeth would appeared to be unnecessary sacrifice of healthy tooth structure.
Alternatives:
The best treatment for edentulous area is still dental implant. In the event that dental implant is not feasible, then a dental bridge is a great alternative treatment.
3. Cosmetics Veneers and Crowns
Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers or porcelain laminates, are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to teeth to improve their appearance. Porcelain veneers are frequently used in cosmetic dentistry to mask teeth that are damaged, worn, discolored, or crooked.
Porcelain veneers utilize materials that can bond to tooth enamel to attach porcelain veneers to teeth. Veneers mimic the translucent surface of a natural tooth, making them very lifelike. Another advantage of porcelain veneers is that they are stain resistant. Porcelain is a ceramic, so its surface is smooth and does not permanently stain.
Porcelain veneers can cover or repair minor tooth damage or defects. Veneers can make chipped, misshapen, or crooked teeth look more attractive. They can also cover existing fillings that have become stained or discolored. Stained or discolored teeth can benefit from porcelain veneers. As an alternative to orthodontic procedures, porcelain veneers can be used to cover gaps between teeth.
4. Composite (Whiting) Filling
If you have a cavity in a tooth, broken fillings, mercury/silver fillings, or amalgam fillings, this type of dental filling is well worth discussing with your dentist. Mercury/silver fillings or amalgam fillings can easily be removed and replaced with far more attractive colored restorations. Most of these amalgam fillings can last a long period of time (some as long as 20-30 years!); however, as the years increases, these amalgam fillings can start to wear and leak. This is when the amalgam fillings need to be replaced. An ideal replacement would be composite/white restorations.
Composite resins closely mimics the color, shape of the natural teeth, and in many instances, it can last a long period of time without having to be replaced.
Composite resins may also be used to enhance the appearance of any tooth, which is a tooth bonding procedure. The composite resin will strengthen and enhance the natural tooth structure as it does with use as a dental filling. (You can read more about a related procedure, tooth bonding, here.)
5. Implants
Implants – artificial tooth supports that are surgically placed into the jaw – can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. This procedure usually works best for those adults who experience discomfort with conventional dentures but who still have healthy gums, adequate bone to support the implant, and a commitment to oral hygiene.
Implants often require outpatient or office surgery and take from several weeks to nine months to complete.
Implants can also be used to replace single missing tooth, congenitally missing teeth and should always be considered as the best treatment alternative when it comes to replacing missing teeth.
These small titanium cylinders function as artificial tooth roots and anchor your artificial teeth, bridgework and/or dentures giving you comfort and chewing capacity.
From the time when the implants are placed, it usually takes 4-6 month before the final restoration can be placed.
6. Dentures
Dentures are made of acrylic resin and are used as removeable replacements for missing teeth. There are two kinds of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures. Both are custom fitted and, if cared for properly, will appear natural. Dentures can also help strengthen facial muscles and aid in chewing. If you are losing some or all of your teeth, dentures could be the solution.
Unfortunately, dentures can take some time to get accustomed to it. For some patients, the idea of denture comes naturally, and they accept it as a normal dental procedure. However, for some patients, dentures are not as easy to get adjusted to. In these instances, we recommend patient considering using implant-supported dentures for a more comfortable fit.
7. Root Canals
Inside each tooth is a pulp chamber that contains the nerves and blood supply for the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected due to decay or injury to the tooth, the pulp must be removed from the center of the tooth and the canals of each root. Once the infected pulp is removed, the remaining chamber is filled with a rubber-based material to seal it off.
All teeth that have had root canal therapy must be protected with a tooth-like artificial covering known as a crown (see crown section.) This is because teeth that have had the pulp removed are more susceptible to fracture.
In many instances, root canal therapy can be completed in one visit. However, when patients presents with an abscessed tooth, it may require multiple visits to complete the root canal therapy.
8. Braces and Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry specializing in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of jaw, face and bite irregularities (malocclusions*). Recent years have brought about many changes within the dental industry, specifically with regards to orthodontic treatment and care. Now more than ever patients are experiencing fewer incidences of cavities and missing teeth due to the heightened awareness of fluoride use and preventative dentistry. This increasing awareness on the health and look of a patient’s smile has fueled the desire for many to seek out orthodontia not only as a medical necessity, but for cosmetic reasons as well.
Whether it’s traditional braces or custom made removable appliances, orthodontics can help you have the healthy, straight, beautiful smile you’ve been waiting for! Orthodontic treatment by Dr. Liao can improve your dental health and change your facial appearance for the better, and it can boost your self-esteem. Orthodontics can provide you with the chance to participate in improving the way you look. Dr. Liao’s patients often feel more self-confident even before treatment is completed.
